Deeply passionate vocals and melodically charged songs, soulfully produced and epically performed, Ketch Harbour Wolves produce an acutely mature sound on their recently self-released sophomore EP, Dead Calm Horizon. Wintry depths of sound and explosively emotive lyrics showcase the intense experience and appreciation that the members have for an icy blue Atlantic Ocean and a harsh winter in Nova Scotia, which results in an album similar to the likes of Interpol and The National.
The Wolves hail from across Ontario, yet foster a deep connection to Ketch Harbour (Nova Scotia). It was there at the edge of the ocean that the band began to grow in the tiny coastal village – at which point KHW was merely a seedling nurtured by vocalist/guitarist Jonathan Tyrrell and percussionist Brian Urbanik. Ketch Harbour Wolves were born five-strong on the familiar ground of Toronto with bass guitarist Scott Winter, lead guitarist Liam Brown, and multi-instrumentalist Kristjan Bergey (keyboards, flute, saxophone) forging the dynamic and powerful quintet that Metro Canada has called “the perfect mix of brooding passion, infectious melodies and rich, layered instrumentation.”
Ketch Harbour wolves have recently been cited as one of the “Top 10 Hottest bands in Canada” by popular blog site Herohill. With live performances both explosive and captivating, the band has developed a feverishly loyal following in Toronto and beyond. Consistently drawing passionate crowds, Ketch Harbour Wolves have showcased at NxNE in 2007, 2008, and 2009, Canadian Music Week 2009 and were recently featured in Toronto Indie Week’s ‘Best of the Best’ showcase.
Dead Calm Horizon is an intricately personal journey and product of growth often hanging on the theme of sea and storms. It slowly dips and falls with intense melodic complexity and unfolds into something obscurely beautiful. Highlights include the easily accessible “Leaves,” characterized with layers of harmonious keys, cello, and guitar. Covering sound over sound then pausing for a simple keyboard line with fuzzy vocals the song crescendos crying “speak not the frailest whisper / sound the alarm we’re sound asleep.” The immediately catchy “Midnight Dark Water” explodes with intense handclaps and a strongly enthusiastic drumbeat; it paints deep visual imagery making it one of the more up-tempo tracks on the EP. “Animals”, definitely one of the standout tracks on the album, is filled with tension. Its lyrics underlie a chaos that is tempered by musical textures, working both toward and against the lyrical theme; constantly building but never releasing. Ending with “Letters,” a simple song telling of the longing for love, the album ends where it began; constantly filled with a powerful search for connection.

Best-of 2008: Top 10 Canadian EPs
“Tyrell’s somber vocals are still weary, but it’s not from being lost in a sea of people. It’s more like being lost at sea, battered by waves and a loneliness and intensity that grows more heightened with every second that passes, leaving you to wonder how you can make it out alive.”
