The Curse of Odysseus

‘Comes a time,’ like Neil said,
And have you anything -
Left undone or left unsaid or left chained to your boots of lead?
Please tell me everything.

I wasn’t born a highway child
But maybe I’ll try it for a while
And see what I can see.

And if I find out what it’s all about
I’ll make sure to give you a shout
But don’t wait up for me.

Just grab the wheel and drive, all night.
And when the sunlight hits the highway we’ll be out of sight -
Far beyond the dust and far beyond the wasteland,
Far beyond the rust covered lovers in the basement.

Call it clichéd call it old;
It’s the greatest story ever told
And it’s the only one I know.

And honey I’ll tell it to you for a while
If you let me hide inside your smile
Until I have to go.

I know I’m not a highway child
But maybe I’ll try it for a while
And see what I can see.

And I don’t know where this roads leads
And I don’t know if it’s what I need
But I’ll take the chance, be alive
Seize the moment,  grab the wheel and drive, all night.
And when the sunlight hits the highway we’ll be out of sight -
Far beyond the dust and far beyond the wasteland,
Far beyond the rust covered lovers in the basement.
Odysseus your curse has never been so strong
And I don’t know if I can take your burden on.
But I’ll carry it through the dust
And carry it through the wasteland
And leave it with the rust covered lovers in the basement.
