Animals
The song began with an image from Tarkovsky’s Stalker. A man lays curled up like a child in a damp culvert amid the detritus of a post-apocalyptic urban landscape. He is attended by an ominous black dog who may be a messenger of some kind. Being human is a difficult endeavour. -J
I Lay down -
Pulling my knees to my chest
As the riot raged around me.
And it’s strange -
with the city in flames I can see
places I’ve never seen before now.
Hallelujah, we’re out of our minds.
Animals, we’re animals.
It’s calm now -
Only the song of the wind
As it sweeps the last of the tear gas.
And did I see you? -
Bearing your teeth to the west
tearing your flag from the bridge at sunset.
Hallelujah, my hands are tied.
Animals, we’re animals.
As if the herds are slowing down.
Animals, we’re animals.
